CM Punk has drawn on one of his sharpest and most personal perspectives to frame his WrestleMania 42 World Heavyweight Championship defense against Roman Reigns — and the picture he paints of Reigns’ career path is one of repeated failure rescued by institutional support rather than earned success. Speaking with Corey Graves, Punk tied the Reigns dynamic to a broader resentment he holds about opportunities in professional wrestling.
“Myself and guys like me — this business has evolved and changed so much, but there is still always going to be resentment towards people that are born on third base. I have been friends with and seen dozens of people that I thought had talent that were never afforded a single opportunity Roman got, and I have watched him get opportunity after opportunity after opportunity, and frankly, fail. Failure is your best teacher, but I don’t think he really learned anything from that. He had management and an entire system that was going to shove him down everybody’s throat, and by some miracle, he finally figured it out,” Punk said.
The critique is rooted in Punk’s well-established identity as someone who made it to the top of WWE without the institutional advantages he believes Reigns received — and who watched others with comparable ability never get the same runway. The contrast between their career paths is a genuine thematic underpinning of their WrestleMania 42 program, giving the championship match a layer of authentic grievance beneath the storyline surface.
