Cody Rhodes has retained the Undisputed WWE Championship at WWE Clash in Italy, defeating Gunther in a match that ended in controversy at the Inalpi Arena in Turin.
Rhodes and Gunther went right at each other from the opening bell, with Gunther taking the early advantage before Rhodes mounted a comeback. A scoop slam drew a pop from the Turin crowd, and Rhodes followed with a Pedigree for a near fall. A disaster kick set up the Cross Rhodes, which also got a two count. Gunther slowed things down with a sleeper that dropped Rhodes to the mat, with Rhodes surviving by reaching the bottom rope.
The two traded exchanges before Rhodes hit a cutter and then connected with the Cross Rhodes for the pinfall — but Gunther’s leg was under the rope at the count of three. The referee did not see it, and Gunther was left protesting the finish as Rhodes was declared the winner.
The controversial ending keeps Rhodes’ reign alive and sets up an immediate rematch argument from Gunther heading out of Clash in Italy.
